Although vapour recompression calls for a more complicated distillation plant, it is economical if the energy requirement exceeds a few megawatts (equivalent to some tons of steam per hour). This is mostly the case when the boiling points of the key components are close to one another. The temperature gradient in the column is then small provided the packing and the internals produce a very small pressure drop. During compression, only a small ratio must be achieved for these conditions, and thus the use of a turboblower instead of a commonly used compressor is indicated. This concept was tested in a pilot plant with a centrifugal two-stage turbo-blower, the diameter of the column being 0,25 m with a packed height of 12 m. The separation results obtained with different mixtures have confirmed this concept. (Kursetz)
