The flexible part-feeding system and its experimental results are described. This system separates only one part at a time without orientation and recognizes its posture by means of a camera and an image processor. A robot, which has been described in detail elsewhere, is used to assemble the parts according to the information from the image processor. The part-feeding system consists of a vibratory-bowl feeder and a vision system. The vibratory-bowl feeder has several bowls and is capable of supplying several different parts. Besides a dish-out and the bowls, which results in a simple configuration of the feeder. Consequently, the multi-storey feeder, which, in conventional ways, would require intensive design considerations of the chutes for maintaining the posture of oriented parts, can now be very simply and practical. The vision system is composed of a solid state camera and a micro-computer for cognition processes. (Wassmann)
