Pneumatic conveying is the most widely used method of inplant transport of bulk materials. In particular, dense phase conveying has attracted attention recently because of its high mass flow ratio (kg-powder/kg-gas). The screw-type pump, an apparatus for dense phase conveying, has the advantages of continuous conveying as opposed to batch conveying and low height. This compactness makes them suitable for confined locations. We have developed two kinds of screw-type pump, one 0.5 ton/hr and the other 1.5 ton/hr in conveying capacity, for short-distance conveyance. According to our findings, the mass flow ratio of the wheat fluor was 104 for transport of 17 m and 81 for transport of 44 m. The purpose of this paper is to describe the principle behind the abovementioned screw-type pump, the material seal property of powder, friction between seal-powder and the screw trough wall and the screw torque.
