a new concept in the automation and computerisation of groups of laboratory gcs used for routine analysis is described. the concept is derived from three prime needs: 1) to eliminate the chance of operator error in setting dials and pushing buttons; 2) in the event of failure of any part of the system it should be possible to reduce certain essential analyses with the operators immediately available; and 3) to avoid the supervisor reading all analytical results to take routine action decisions. the design concept has bee achieved by the use of programmable timers individual to each chromatograph. a robust plastic programme card is inserted into the timer to select the chromatographic conditions appropriate to the sample and allow settling time before sample injection is premitted.
