The world of MEMS is characterized by a wide variety of technologies. For each MEMS design to be performed the most appropriate technology must be selected first. This requires continuous training-on-the-job for the staff involved in this task. Conventional classroom courses are too expensive and time consuming to be useful in this context, especially for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) with tight time and budget constraints. TRANSTEC provides a novel concept of Internet-based multimedia training courses for MEMS technologies and design. It is based on a central Web server, the TRANSTEC Competence Centre that provides all relevant services for learners and course contents providers. TRANSTEC courses use the pedagogic concept of 'Learning by Engineering', i.e, except pure multimedia teaching units (including text, pictures, video and animations) access to professional design software across the Internet is provided. TRANSTEC learners hence start using the courseware to learn how to use the technology and tools required for their design. Step by step as they get familiar with the design procedures they will make less use of the teaching units and shift their focus of attention towards the practical use of the design tools. In this manner TRANSTEC supports the gradual progress from learning to expert performance of MEMS design. The TRANSTEC Competence Centre includes various schemes of access control and billing mechanisms. TRANSTEC services will be commercially available by mid-2000. With the combination of teaching and practical application TRANSTEC is particularly useful as a complete MEMS design environment for SMEs that are not able to have design tool suites for several technologies licensed on a permanent basis.
