The huge success of wind energy in Europe in the last years has led to locally high percentages of wind energy. However, the intermittence of the resource is seen as a large problem at utilities. This work aims at answering two questions: how can the integration into the electricity grid be improved by short-term forecasting, and what are the benefits of distributing wind energy generation over Europe? The latter one stems from the idea that there is always some wind somewhere. This leads to a smoother generation profile that is easier to integrate if the generation is sufficiently dispersed and there are no grid bottlenecks. Even with the existing mix of conventional power plants, 20 % of the electricity in Europe can be generated by wind energy. This corresponds to a saving of ca. 60 % of all fossil fuel costs in Europe and allows for the decommissioning of fossil fuel power plants equivalent to more than 10 % of the installed wind capacity.
