The Collisison Avoidance System (CAS) is defined as a system which uses a variety of sensors to determine whether the driver is not able to control the vehicle any more and precautions are necessary to take over car control to avoid a collision. This could be achieved by emergency braking, single wheel braking or controlled steering or controlled sliding. The system fills the gaps between drivers full control and a crash. At the moment a lot of resources are put in the field of sensors and system components to realize a CAS. There are two main problems with the implementation of such a system: - the approval and development of the software used for the decision that the driver is no more in the position to control the car is extremely complicated, - the legal aspects about the product reliability have to be solved for the benefit of customers and suppliers. If there are problems in the area of software approval and product reliability for a full CAS the next step could be to use the system performance to achieve a reliable collision prediction. If there is the opportunity to recognize an impact before it happens smoother measures for passenger safety can be provided. The airbag development is already going this direction with the development of precrash sensors. Using the collision avoidance sensors and the precrash sensors sequentially and as a redundancy for the decision of an incoming impact the airbag system can be changed to softer reaction and also to the usage of reversible systems. CAS will have a dramatic impact on the future development of airbag systems even if the collision avoidance system is not introduced on the market.
