Cylinder wear and cylinder lubrication oil consumption are essential parameters for the operating economy of large 2-stroke diesel engines. Therefore it is of great economic importance to minimize the cylinder wear and/or the consumption of cylinder oil. The new HJL SIP lubrication concept meets these demands. Tests in service have shown a potential of up to 50 % cylinder oil savings without trade-off in liner wear. The experiments and tests carried out with a new lubrication system, based on the new technology of injecting cylinder oil into the air swirl in the engine cylinder, prove that the system can work as expected with low cylinder and piston ring wear rates even with very low cylinder oil dosages. The paper describes the system and the methods used in designing and testing the system, before final testing in service. The results obtained during approximately 10,000 hours of service are described and discussed.
