Neck injuries under rear impact continue to be a serious societal problem. Dummies used in prevention strategies are currently validated by impact tests on cadavers in the time domain. The originality of this study is the proposition of a minimum complexity physical model based on the modal characterisation of the human neck in vivo. Two modes have been clearly identified. After having created an analytical model, we have realized a original physical two pivots model of the neck. For the validation, we have compared the frequency response of the model with the volunteer's one. The proposed model can act as a new experimental tool for headrest evaluation. Furthermore the method used in this study seems to be appropriate for dummy development and validation.
