Dusts and sludges are a problem for Brazilian stainless steel industries and they must be disposed of in controlled landfills. Finding areas to make more landfills is becoming a difficult task and the new landfills are being placed far from the industries. This fact leads to an increase in disposal prices and, furthermore, in production prices. Waste characterization is an essential step in a recycling process definition. Four kinds of dust and three kinds of sludge, generated in the stainless steel production process in Brazilian steel plants were characterized in this work. The techniques used to characterize the waste were chemical analyses, size separation tests, density measurements, X-ray diffraction analyses, Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS) microanalysis. Most of the dust and sludge particles had a spherical shape and were mainly composed of iron and chromium oxides in the form of a spinel. Precipitation of a second phase was identified in some particles.
