The vast majority of fatigue analysis carried out by structural analysts at Wärtsilä Finland are for components where the dominant loads results in billions of cycles and where the most critical locations resides on the surfaces (including contact areas) of the components. Fatigue analyses of engine components with complex geometries normally require considerable manual calculations when accuracy is important. The usage of statistical size factors together with a multiaxial fatigue criterion give a possibility to achieve quality calculations that can be calculated directly based on the FE-results with small amounts of manual user input. ABAQUS is used for the stress calculation and consequently standard post-processing is performed in ABAQUS/Viewer. The capabilities offered by the Viewer, i.e. Python scripting as well as an easily modifiable GUI combined with convenient routines for I/O to the output database, has been utilized to implement a program for multiaxial fatigue analyses. The program handles the multiaxial fatigue analysis using the Findley criterion and most importantly also calculates the statistical size factor. Since parts of the fatigue analyses are computer intensive, those parts have been created as compiled Fortran modules, which are imported into ABAQUS and used as any standard Python function. The results achieved gives very good quality results but as in most calculation programs the quest for speed is an ongoing process.
