The study was carried out with four Finnish main suppliers and nine subcontractors. One of the goals was to divide the subcontract co-operation to sensible sub-processes. The second goal was to test the proposed sub-process division in practice by measuring the quality of the co-operation processes. The proposed sub-processes are: 1) subcontractor / main supplier selecting process, 2) concurrent engineering process, 3) quality assurance process, 4) logistics process (physical sys-tem, delivery decisions), 5) manufacturing planning process (manufacturing capacity with related decisions), 6) financial process, 7) contract and order process and 8) sub-process management process. In the first phase the proposed sub-process division was discussed with main suppliers and subcontractors. In the second phase the main suppliers and subcontractors were asked to evaluate the quality of the co-operation with their partners. The proposed sub-contract process division work quite well as a basis of the mutual discussion. The evaluation of the quality of co-operation revealed substantial differences in the partner's way of thinking. The main suppliers emphasized the quality and development of the quality assurance-, financial- and sub-process management processes. The subcontractors emphasized the quality and development of the contract- and the order-and manufacturing planning process. The partner's views were most congruent with respect to the concurrent engineering and sub-process management processes. The gaps between the partner's opinions are partly significant. Bridging these gabs may be difficult work but probably worth of an effort.
