A new method for grain refining of Ti-48Al-2Cr-2Nb alloy by cyclic heat treatment was presented. The effect of cyclic heat treatment and its particular parameters (the upper temperature of cycle 1375 deg C to 1450 deg C, time of soaking in upper temperature of cycle 2.5 min to 10 min, water, oil, compressed air or air cooling rate from upper temperature of cycle as well as number of cycles from 1 to 10) on macro- and the microstructure as well as grain size of the alloy was studied and the essential influence of thermal cycle parameters on obtained grain refine effect was established. The highest refinement of grains was achieved after 5 cycles when the highest temperature was 1435 deg C, heating time 5 min and cooling was carried out with air. The average grain size decrease from 1234 micrometer to 429 micrometer after the treatment. The grain refinement of the alloy resulted in a considerable increase in its hardness (from 270 HV10 to 370 HV10).
