The friction coefficient and wear rate of PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene) composite filled with graphite, carbon fibre and carbon black have been studied. Among those carbon fillers, carbon black was the most effective filler to improve the wear resistance. The 10 mass% addition of carbon black was the suitable concentration to obtain lower wear rate. PTFE composite filled with carbon black showed no or less abrasion on the counterpart surface, on the contrary, the PTFE composite filled with carbon fibre showed higher abrasion. Addition of carbon black made the PTFE tend to have the same or lower friction coefficient comparing with pure PTFE. The correlations between the average particle size of carbon black and tribological properties of PTFE composite have also been studied.
