BCM (carbendazim) was developed just in time to replace phenyl mercurial fungicides in the paint industry and quickly became the backbone of coating film preservatives in Europe for more than two decades. BCM has recently been reclassified as mutagenic and reprotoxic. However, the levels normally used in paints (less than 0.1%) do not require hazard labelling. BCM is highly stable in coatings, even under very alkaline conditions. Experiments are presented to show that surface levels of BCM are replenished from the bulk coating. Provided that precautions are observed during manufacture, BCM remains a safe and effective dry film biocide. The use of BCM does not trigger the need for classification and labelling of exterior coatings. For several applications BCM is an indispensable, well proven film fungicide with outstanding activity against target organisms. Experimental data on its migration behaviour in paint films helps to explain its sustained activity in exterior paints and stucco. Concepts have been developed for the safe handling of BCM in coatings production.
