Experimentally investigations have been done in order to estimate the frequency of the eye blink reflex especially in the case of an irradiation from a class-2 laser according to IEC 60825-1. In addition to the fact that the number of persons who showed a blink reflex was less than 20 % it was found that there exists a dependence on the wavelength of the applied laser considering the frequency of this natural physiological reaction. The investigations have been done with 788 volunteers in lab and field trials at wavelengths of 532 nm, 635 nm and 670 nm. In a first study the tested volunteers were fixed on a chin and forehead rest. With a different test apparatus where the head was unrestrained it was shown in a second study with 438 test persons that the results are independent of the test procedure. The experimentally achieved results showed a much weaker relation to the well-known V(lambda)-curve than it is valid for photobic vision and can be expressed as a blink reflex function according to the well-known power law of STEVENS in psychophysics.
