Overhead presentation. Derived from the Greek tribos, a rubbing, the science (Tribology) of the mechanisms of friction, lubrication, and wear of interacting surfaces that are in relative motion has profound impact on textiles. With all processes today, soft or hard synthetic and natural fibers experience relative motion to themselves and other surface. Lubrication and friction play critical roles in managing fiber properties, quality and simply the ability to process them. Important discoveries on the role of Tribologic sciences through changes of the structural make-up of a lubricant or surfactant continue to make an impact on the textile industry. This lecture will explore a variety of tribologic, chemical and physical properties that can be adjusted providing unique attributes for consumer, manufacturer and converters. This paper will further outline several new developments about SP effects to biodegradability, a crucial property affecting the quality of the global environment.
