The increase of the line productivity requires boosting the annealing performances and therefore enhancing the cooling performances. The increase of thermal transfer between the strip and the blowing gas requires high-speed gas jets, amplifying the strip fluttering phenomena. This leads to productivity decreases or to strip quality damages, especially after the zinc pot. Arcelor Research and Drever International are working together on the development of optimized gas jets cooling systems avoiding the strip vibrations. Drever International developed a 2/3 reduce-scaled cooling device and implemented it on an Arcelor Research experimental pilot line. The process parameters and the design parameters will be investigated in order to characterize the strip vibrations phenomena and to define optimized solutions for improving the cooling performances of present and future galvanizing lines while reducing the strip fluttering in the rapid cooling zone as well as in the cooling tower.
