The mechanical strength of the welded joints at low temperatures (down to -60 deg C) increase with increasing slag ratio (basicity) of the flux. When the slag ratio is calculated by using the Bonesevskij formula, the acidic fluxes showed the slag ratio below 0.9, the neutral ones at 0.9 to 1.2, the basic ones at 1.2 to 2.0 and the highly basic ones at above 2.0. The weldments made by using the acidic fluxes contain more than 750 ppm of oxygen and are accompanied with slags melting at 1100 deg C to 1300 deg C. In the case of neutral fluxes, the oxygen content is 550 ppm to 750 ppm and the slags melt at 1300 deg C to 1500 deg C. In the case of basic (and highly basic) fluxes, the weldments contain less than 550 ppm oxygen and the slags melt at above 1500 deg C. The bulk density of the fluxes, their hygroscopicity and granulometric composition are also determined. The new ceramic OK Flux 10.71 is commercially available since 2008 from Russian ESAB-SVEL company. The flux shows low alloying properties, has bulk density 1.05 kg/dm3 to 1.20 kg/dm3 and grain size 0.2 mm to 1.6 mm. The flux contains Al2O3+MnO below 40 %, CaO+MgO below 30 %, SiO2+TiO2 below 26 % and CaF2 below 22 %. It can be used for welding with many commercial welding wires.
