How physical objects can be transformed into natural, seamless, unrestricted touch interfaces has been researched at the Institute of Mechanical Engineering in the EU research project Tangible Acoustic Interfaces for Computer-Human Interaction (TAI-CHI). The objective is to design multimodal interfaces on the basis of acoustic signals that bridge the gap between the virtual and physical worlds. An approach to localise acoustic sources in solids is investigated. Scope of work is to become objects of everyday life touch sensitive. An essential part of this is its sensor arrangement. Therefore, vibration behaviour of rectangular plates has been examined theoretically, experimentally and by numerical simulation. Consistent results exemplify observations as natural oscillation.
