Since June 2009, Damart, the thermal clothing and underwear retailer has 20,000 additional square metres in its warehouse in Hem (North of France); in this way, it can process and fill all orders on one single site, a task which previously involved multiple locations. Damart initially gained public recognition with its Thermolactyl product in the 50s, and has enjoyed regular growth over the decades. A clothing warehouse must be able to process several references with zero errors. The nature of Damart's specific business impacts significantly on its logistics; specifically, gifts are sent along with paying orders. These gifts account for 10 million units received each year. As regards transport, items ordered via distance selling are either sent by the post or are entrusted to private distributors. Articles for stores are picked up by transporters and standard delivery contractors. Lastly, there are Damart trucks carrying merchandise from warehouse to warehouse. In order to standardize its logistics processes and guarantee ongoing growth, the brand decided to in-stall a Warehouse Management System (WMS). It went for the Reflex product, developed by Hardis with a full range of warehouse management features, from reception to dispatch. The new system includes a quality control module for incoming articles; this is a new function. Specifically, this consists in taking samples from incoming stock either on the unloading quay, or from stock. On reaching the warehouse, the parcels are either sent to stock or to picking areas (picking from a stock of order elements). Picking areas are supplied twice a day: morning and midday for urgent orders. Regardless of destination (distance selling, store or export), operators fill orders from the same stock. An advanced reserve may be required to guarantee smooth re-supply. The operators validate their order portfolios on a terminal. Final validation triggers stock consumption and the corresponding parcel is prepared. Then, at the last sorting station prior to dispatch, the operators add a catalogue, check that the articles correspond to the order, and put on the dispatch label. Each pending operation is logged in the system; this means that WMS can be used to trace stock status in the warehouse in real time. Physical flows and computerized data flows are synchronized. Inventories can be carried out at any time. The Reflex software can be adjusted as required on the basis of progress indicators.
