Wireless inter-vehicle commünication (IVC) is envisioned to increase road safety, to improve traffic efficiency, and to enrich driving experience. At the same time, IVC faces numerous security and privacy threats because of its inherent openness. This work concentrates on the security of communication mechanlsms used in IVC. Based an a thorough application and network analysis, five typical communication patterns are characterized. The concisely defined patterns serve as the basis for analyzing vulnerabilities. Using network simulation, the author assesses the impact of the most severe attacks revealing serious damage potential. With the background of this analysis, he develops targeted security mechanisms for each communication pattern. The presented solutions particularly take care of specific IVC network constraints such as high mobility, limited channel capacity, decentralized operation, and scalability. As a result, the author achieves a solid understanding of security issues in IVC as well as a comprehensive set of robust and efficient communication mechanisms.
