Over the last few years standards have been developing related to integrating real-time bus information. The RTIG specifications have been successful in enabling server to server connections between systems. These connections enable adjacent control systems to exchange data about crossborder services. New specifications are now coming into operation. In particular this paper discusses an early implementation of the RTIG over-air specification used for retrieving bus location and service information from on-board communication units. The latest generation bus electronic ticket machines (ETM) have integrated GPS and GPRS components. This means that buses need only one electronic device (the ETM) added to the bus to provide all the service information required for realtime information gathering, schedule adherence monitoring and bus priority. This paper discusses the early experience with a new generation open standards-based RTI system installed by Kent County Council in partnership with Envitia Ltd.
