Infrared thermal imaging and passive light intensification had the monpoly on night vision techniques for a long time. As an alternative to these technologies, active imaging has significantly been improved in the recent past, such that most experts now agree to consider this technology as an important capability to be acquired in the future years. Indeed, even for ranges up to ten kilometers, active imaging enhances the vision in bad weather conditions, allows 3D imaging of the observed scenes and makes it possible to analyze the materials present in the scene by means of polarimetric methods. This paper aimes to overview the state of the art of the acitve imaging field still being halfway between applied research and mature technology.
