Permanent Magnet Synchronous Machine (PMSM) electric drives are preferred due to their high power density, efficiency and their low moment of inertia. However such drives perform poorly in the field weakening and strengthening regions which means that maximum speed and maximum torque developed are limited by the maximum DC voltage available and the current carrying capacity of the stator windings. To mitigate these drawbacks a Hybrid Excited Synchronous Machine (HESM) drive is introduced which is smaller and lighter for the same speed and torque rating. Random Space Vector Modulation (RSVM) is used to further reduce the size of the electric drive and hence reduce the volume and cost of drivetrain. The new drive proposed is experimentally validated and concluded with its pros and cons.
