Ellwood Quality Steels (EQS) is a leading supplier of high quality steel ingots to the open die forging and ring rolling industries. Ingots produced range in size from 2 to 70 tonnes and compositions from plain carbon to tool steels and martensitic stainless. EAF melting with ASEA-SKF split steelmaking utilizing two ladle furnaces and a vacuum station provides combined high quality and high productivity. State of the art process automation and data collection tools have been implemented throughout the steelmaking, bottom pour and shipping areas. Technology and automation offer tools for timely and accurate diagnosis of problems, however the backbone of process control and quality assurance resides in application of fundamental steelmaking knowledge to the steelmaking process. At EQS, the steelmaking process is carried out in a manner that results in optimum cleanliness and product consistency through well-defined practices and a highly trained workforce. Because a skilled workforce is critical to the success of EQS, employee safety is the number one priority at all times. This paper discussed the ways in which EQS steelmaking process has evolved since inspection in 1985 to increase production and become one of the largest tonnage steel suppliers to the open die forging and ring rolling industries while maintaining unsurpassed product quality. Furthermore, the necessary improvements in the bottom pouring and shipping areas to accommodate higher production levels are included.
