Ingot casting is the preferred processing route of our customers, for the manufacture of several grades of steels that include C-steels, low alloy steels and certain grades of high alloy steels. A wide variety of ingots have been cast from 3.5 MT to as large as 45 MT. Ingot sizes less than 5 MT are hot charged and subjects to in-house hot rolling to required sections. Lager ingots (6 MT to 45 MT) are manufactured and supplied to meet the requirements of closed and open die forging industries. A range of cylindrical ingot casting (diameters - 400, 500 & 600 mm) is also made to meet the requirements of ring rolled product development. These ingots have a tolerable level of central looseness that is removed during central punching during ring rolling. The steel for ingot casting is made from a 35T electric arc furnace in combination with secondary refining facility of ladle furnace and vacuum degassing. Emphasis is always placed on making clean steels with very low gas contents. The ingot castings are predominantly made through bottom pouring. Several casting parameters have been optimized for a given grade and ingot size. The parameters include superheat of molten steel during casting, Ar shrouding, choice of refractory, casting speed control, choice of mould powder, exothermic powder etc. The ingot quality and yield of the material are a strong function of the operating parameters. Constant quality checks ensure ingot soundness and freedom from exogenous inclusions associated with reoxidation, refractory erosion and mould powder entrapment. The presentation would bring forth best practices adopted in the plant to achieve high quality products.
