A new electro slag remelting research equipment was constructed and tested at Stahlzentrum Freiberg, a privaten on-profit institute at Technical University Bergakademie Freiberg. Remelts with variable electrical parameters and variable materials can by carried out by using this facility. The control system is automatically working PC-based software in connection with a thyristor control of the electrical power. Different compositions of commercial ESR and synthetic slags were used in experiments. The remelting procedure was focused on parameters like electrical conductivity and the interacting melting temperature of the system.The cleanness of steel was measured by standard method of metallographic tests after remelting resp. hot forming (for example the K0-number, DIN 50602, or resp. ASTM E45-D). An automatically analysis of carried out using scanning electron microscope parallel to the classical light microscope. At this analysis the bright and the dark particles at the metallographic sample are found due to variations in gray-scale. Information of the morphology and the chemical composition of the particles are measured and analyzed. The development of cleanness and the variation in chemical composition of the inclusions can be investigated systematically by this method. During there melting process a relative high fraction of very small particles closed to the slag composition was observed.These particles are formed during removal of the primary inclusions. The favorable distribution of nonmetallic inclusions (e.g. homogeneity, size and kind of inclusion) after remelting in comparison to the initial material are expected to improve the mechanical properties. A new and special evaluation and discussion of the results is possible by analyzing only the interesting single inclusion distribution plots and respectively the frequency distributionin the concrete classes.In addition the slag parameters are pre-calculated by thermodynamic software and the empiric results are compared with the measurements.
