Overhead presentation. Nowadays, mature and saturated markets in all consumer goods categories in Europe and America can be observed. Global expansion strategies, especially in the BRIC states, obscure the decreasing number of consumers, their weakening will to consume and also stagnating purchasing power. Additionally there is the increasing importance of more qualitative and conscious consumption in the clothing market. The sustainability movement, originally promoted by the "Lohas" (= Lifestyle of health and sustainability) consumers, put forward the question of where, how and why products are consumed. Extremely well and quickly informed by the growing social networks, this target-group in no way accepts bad working conditions in factories or toxic residues in textiles and clothing. Brands may thus lose their total brand reputation and consumer loyalty. The enhancement of the movement of sustainability is called "Sustainism" and it influences all parts of modern living such as design, architecture, media, business, art, life-style and technology. Companies now have to find solutions to problems such as how to respond long-term to sustainability, globalization, localization, internet communities, and Fair Trade in order to stay competitive. The presentation shows the most important aspects of Sustainism relating to the volatile fashion consumers' buying patterns and how the fashion industry may respond to these new factors. It will highlight the net-society, the post-growth-society, seasonal consuming, and the sharing phenomenon. It will also suggest possible approaches for the textile and clothing industry.
