The aim of the present work was to expand experimentally gained knowledge about ORMOCER®s, a class of organic-inorganic hybrid polymers, with analytical and theoretical methods. Small Angle X-Ray Scattering experiments (SAXS experiments) were combined with modeling studies based on force field methods to investigate selected ORMOCER® materials. SAXS measurements utilizing solutions of ORMOCER®s in isobutylacetate (EIBE) confirmed the structural size of ORMOCER®-I (0.7 to 1.0 nm) obtained in previous analyses. The unknown structural size of the primary particles of ORMOCER®-II could be approximated to 1.2 nm. An atomistic model could be developed for the experimentally well characterized material ORMOCER®-I. The developed model is able to correctly reproduce the experimental values for the density of this material both before and after the radical polymerization reaction. The special consideration of octaphenylcyclotetrasiloxane (cyclo-DDDD) as a part of the polymer lead to a further improvement of the modeling results concerning the densities. Noteworthy, the presence of cyclo-DDDD in ORMOCER®-I had been experimentally confirmed by 29Si-NMR measurements. Based on the model, simulations were performed in order to investigate the influence of the selected model size on the modeling results. First approaches to describe the diffusion properties of ORMOCER®-I were made, additionally. The modeling study of the second material ORMOCER®-II lead to an adjusted atomistic model that is able to describe the investigated material before and after the polymerization reaction. The simulation results confirmed the larger structure size derived from the scattering results. The investigation of two different polymerization strategies completed the modeling study of ORMOCER®-II. ORMOCER®-DIM01 was the third material investigated using force field methods. An atomistic model could be derived from the less complex and more defined structure of this material. The density of the polymerized material was underestimated by the model (6 to 8 %), although the non-polymerized material was well described concerning the density.
