Temporary (biodegradable) implants on the basis of high strength Mg alloys are breaking the current paradigm in biomaterial science to develop only corrosion resistant ones. They are promising as candidates for orthopedic and stent applications (given the appropriate mechanical properties, biocompatibility and degradation rate). It was found that the selective addition of alloying elements could influence both the strength and the corrosion resistance of Mg. Degradation behavior was characterized by different methods, the results were compared and discussed.
