One of the most important tasks in current research topics in the field of fossil energy conversion is the increase of efficiency and the reduction of pollutant emissions. The objective of this study is to create a profound understanding of the combustion process and the pollutant formation in large-bore natural gas engines. The ignition of the investigated process is initiated by a spark plug within a gas-scavenged prechamber and is analyzed by experimental and numerical methods. By varying characteristic prechamber parameters it is shown that efficiency, cycle-to-cycle variations and pollutant emissions can be optimized significantly by suitable combination of these parameters. Additionally pollutant formation in large-bore natural gas engines is analyzed in detail and possible optimization potentials are identified.
