The Finishing sequence for round bars (this means the last four passes of the configuration) is carried out by a finishing block called Reducing and Sizing Mill. This sequence implies the following scheme: oval, pre- round, round, lemon round, final round. The reduction area of the last two passes is very low in order to achieve a better dimensional precision of the rolled bar, (this is known as low out-of-roundness condition of the final product). However, in order to achieve this condition, each final diameter has its own configuration pattern in the finishing block. Therefore, none of the passes are to be shared. Aim: Hence, we mainly aim at reducing the complexity we encounter in the Finishing Block with the sizes varying from diameters 66.5 to diameters 88.9 (twelve different final sizes). To be clear, the goal is to diminish the number of rolls (grooves) necessary to roll these diameters. By reducing the number of rolls mentioned above, we also aim at diminishing the time necessary to mount the stands of the Finishing Block. Methodology: PDCA (continuous improvement cycle - Plan-Do-Check-Action) . Technical roll pass design knowledge. Results achieved: The pass configuration for diameters varying from 66.5 to 88.9 was modified. The number of rolls decreased from 44 pairs to 24 pairs. Hence, the time needed to mount stands also decreased. Finally, we have confirmed that the modification of the roll pass design has brought about no changes in the dimensional quality of these 12 final round products.
