Surface texture is indispensable in fashion and textile design and also factors heavily into the creative process. Technological advances in the fashion industry have yielded many new and attractive surface texture features, which afford designers more opportunity to realize a greater array of design concepts, but a clear understanding of applying and programming surface texture is necessary for assisting with or coordinating the process of fashion design. In this study, surface texture is examined as the surface characteristic of a piece of apparel from manipulating materials, which is a breakthrough versus the traditional concept of texture, which is restricted to the performance and surface quality of a fabric. This paper aims to develop a design process model to achieve a systematic design method of surface texture development, in concert with technical considerations, pre-determined design themes and design objectives. The principles of developing this model are studied, based on the theory of practice-based research and a variety of design process models developed by other scholars. The findings of the study are developed into a theoretical framework of design approach so as to be significantly relevant to theoretical research, education, communication and practical work about surface texture development. They also designate the phases of creative thinking and actions of surface texture development from the initial design notion to the prototype development while incorporating the holistic design theme.
