(1) State-of-the-Art: At present, semiconductor manufacturing comanies are faced with the following key challenges: (a) Increase of non-productive manufacturing time owing to time consuming measurement Stepps, recipe qualification and equipment downtime; (b) Increased requirements concerning equipment reliability, operational availability and utilization; (c) Increased manufacturing fluctuations due to increased amount of processing steps per process equipment (and vice versa). (2) Motive and objective of the studies Aim of the project: Development of solutions and approaches that are consolidated by the generic term "Manufacturing Science" and that are suitable of facing the key challenges named in section (1), thus targeting at sustainably strengthening the global competitiveness of the involved parties. (3) Method: Cooperative approach within the frame of an ENIAC joint undertaking project in order to cover a broad range of research and development activities and various application fields with respect to virtual metrology (VM), predictive maintenance (PdM) and adaptive control plan (ACP). Approach: Development of solutions and models in combination with their subsequent evaluation on the basis of real process data obtained in manufacturing lines of various producers; involvement of InReCon in the development of assessment methods for the calculation of the economic effects of the obtained technical solutions. (4) Results: Development of generic solutions of high degree of innovation for the main topics mentioned by section (3) and proof of their industrial applicability and economic benefit: (a) Development of common architectures and a fab-wide framework (called "IMPROVE-Framework") (b) Development of virtual metrology (c) Development of models in order to predict equipment behaviour (d) Simulation-based examination, evaluation and adaption of production schedules and control plans (e) Establishment of an equipment forum (5) Conclusions and possible applications: (a) Achievement of economic benefit for all partners (b) Creation of trust and fostering a sense of community in IMPROVE are the basis for expedient collaborations of the project partners, which are potentially realized in the future (c) Identification o starting points for further application of the developed solution approaches, thus exceeding exclusive application in semiconductor manufacturing → Enabling the increase of manufacturing efficiency for regional companies belonging to other industrial branches(d) Strengthened subject-specific expertise of InReCon → Application in future consulting and service contracts with industrial clients possible at innovative developments.
