Overhead presentation. Imparting water repellency to textiles is one of the most frequent procedures carried out in textile service companies during textile reprocessing. For this reason two recently finished research projects focused on this topic. In the first project a rapid method for selfmonitoring of hydrophobization processes was developed. Aim of the second project was the development of a process for the hydrophobisation/oleophobisation of textiles in the alternative solvent "liquid carbon dioxide". Background for the development of a rapid method for selfmonitoring of hydrophobization processes with fluorocarbon resins in textile service companies was the fact that for the testing of the quality of theses finishes only a number of standardized test methods are available, all of them having some drawbacks (e.g. high costs, only spot checks of limited areas etc.). Therefore, in addition to the already available product control methods there is a need for a new rapid method for the process control of the hydrophobization with fluorocarbon resins in textile service companies. During a research project aggregachromically functionalized liquid-repellent finishes based on novel time-temperature-indicators (TTI) for the first time have been generated and applied onto textiles. During application the TTIs were distributed over the whole textile surface. After being subjected to a time-temperature-profile needed for thermal activation of the fluorocarbon resins a specific color change within the TTIs can be observed under ultraviolet light. This color change can be detected and analyzed right after the thermal treatment on the whole textile surface with a mobile functional model developed also within the research project. Thereby it is possible to control whether the time-temperatureprofile was met on the entire surface. The applied TTIs had no negative influence on the optical properties of the textiles as well as on meeting of relevant standard requirements. Dry cleaning and hydrophobisation / oleophobisation of textiles which cannot be treated in aqueous media is nowadays performed in organic solvents like perchloroethylene (PERC) or hydrocarbon solvents (HCS). In principle dry cleaning of textiles with liquid carbon dioxide (LCO2) is an alternative. Aim of the second research project was the development of a process for the hydrophobisation / oleophobisation of textiles in liquid carbon dioxide. Special fluorocarbons, silicone-systems as well as new systems based on dendrimeres or hyperbranched polymers, sol gel systems and the application of hydrophobically modified nanoparticles were investigated. The investigations showed that fluorocarbons can be applied effectively from LCO2. The hydrophobisation / oleophobisation systems were applied to the textile samples by a combination of dipping and spraying at temperature and pressure parameters typical for LCO2. The solubility of the phobisation systems in LCO2 and the degree of hydrophobisation / oleophobisation depended on the solvent concentration in the phobisation system. In addition the investigations showed that fluoropolymer-systems - in contrast to the classical application from organic solvents - do not need a thermal treatment after the application. The achieved hydrophobisation / oleophobisation was comparable to classical systems. Residuals from cleaning auxiliaries for LCO2 did not have a negative impact on the finishing quality which was comparable to common PERC-processes.
