In 2013 Siemens VAI improved the secondary dedusting system of the steel plant of SSAB Raahe, Finland to reduce environmental emissions and to meet the requirements of the authorities. The present paper outlines the main features of the upgrade of the secondary dedusting system as well as highlights of plant operation and performance during the start-up period. The biggest dust emissions are created during the charging of hot metal mixers and converters. The secondary dedusting system was improved in a way that not only the emissions from the hot metal mixers and the converters are captured completely, also other processes which produce dust have been investigated and the secondary dedusting system has been optimized to capture these dust emission sources. In the upgrade project the capacity of secondary dedusting system was increased and new suction hoods, static cooler, ducts, and a new bag filter unit along with fans and stack were installed. For better understanding of the process, numerical simulations of the fluid flow have been carried out at project start.
