In conclusion, it has been shown in the IFPL capability studies at GE that beam quality improves processing potential ,as have the results reported for SOA rod laser systems. Furthermore, there appears to be a significant capability improvement in going from SOA rod laser beam quality (25 to 40 mm-mrad) at 250 to 300 Watts to IFPL beam quality (7 mm-mrad) at 500 Watts and over 1 kW. The high brightness and superior beam quality of the IFPL makes it the preferred choice for integration into large machine tools with flying optics and injection/delivery via fiber optics, in order to optimize system capability. To date, the majority of the IFPL applications have encroached on EDM applications. This is simply a result of the deep hole drilling/thick cross-section cutting capability of the IFPL. No conventional applications have been established as other laser systems are capable and are in production. However, the IFPL has been shown to be capable of conventional (shallow) hole drilling and other cutting applications, and will be used in these capacities as IFPLs are procured by production.
