Virtual Instruments is a term used to describe measuring devices that plug into PCs, where access to the capabilities of the instrument is through the PC keyboard and display. When these were first introduced, they provided both lower cost and higher throughput advantages, causing them to grow rapidly. Over time, the capabilities of these Virtual Instruments have been expanded through the integration of new technology and techniques, while Standard 'Instruments' have become increasingly easy to integrate with a computer through standard communication ports. These trends are blurring the lines between Virtual and Standard Instruments, presenting important new decisions for users. The paper will address many of the key aspects that differentiate these solutions, and suggest likely future paths each may follow.
