Recently the formation of 8-OHdA and 8-OHdG photoproducts in pico- and nanosecond laser irradiated solutions of dA and dG was followed by HPLC with electrochemical detection. The intensity response of these photoproducts formation has shown in both cases to be similar to that of the absorptivity loss indicating a two-quantum photoreaction mechanism. The major 2/3 - 4/5 part of these products are presumably formed through OH-radical chemistry under pico- and nanosecond irradiation conditions, while the remaining part seems to involve initial cation radicals. Based on the extremely high sensitivity of the electrochemical detection, experiments are designed to study the formation of 8-OHdA and 8-OHdG in DNA and cells.
