Description of a refined method for estimating the 3-D geometry of cerebral structures of a patient's brain from magnetic resonance (MR) images by adapting a 3-D atlas to the images. The 3-D atlas represents the figures of anatomical subdivisions of deep cerebral structures as series of contours reconstructed from a stereotactic printed atlas. The method correlates corresponding points and curve segments that are recognizable in both the atlas and the image, by elastically deforming the atlas two-dimensionally, while maintaining the point-to-point and contour-to-contour correspondence, until equilibrium is reached. The method was used experimentally for a patient with Parkinson's disease, and successfully estimated the substructures of the thalamus to be treated.
