Considerable progress has been reported in the field of bio-tribology since the term was introduced in 1973. Four examples of developments will be outlined to illustrate some of the achievements and problems still requiring attention: 1. Wear of the human dental tissues (forces, dental attrition, wear of restorative materials, friction, toothbrush and dentifrice). 2. The tribology of skin (structure, friction, wear, shaving, textiles and hair, hair). 3. The functioning of natural synovial joints (fluid film and boundary lubrication). 4. The tribology of total joint replacements (metal-on-polymer, metal-on-metal, ceramic-on-ceramic, cushion bearings). The four examples of tribology applied to biological systems cied above reflect progress and opportunities in this field. There is little doubt that biotribology will be a fertile area of activity in years to come.
