The authors examine both the existing state of traditional sensor technology and 'state-of-the-art' silicon technology. Reasons why silicon sensors hold great promise for the future are also addressed. Finally, predictions on the growth potential of silicon sensors are discussed as well as potential impediments to progress that could delay that growth. It is concluded that the fully integrated silicon sensor will be the key to achieving the full potential of the totally integrated vehicle. These devices can provide intersystem technology compatibility, optimum system partitioning and, most importantly, allow each system to achieve maximum reliability. This is an important consideration since overall system life-cycle costs might decrease while the individual sensor costs increase.
