Of the various types of heat exchangers which excist; shell and tube, air cooled exchangers, block type, coiled, spiral and plate, it is the plate exchanger which has perhaps undergone the greatest amount of change since its first inception in the 19th century. The changes which have surrounded this exchanger type have been an outgrowth of the continuous attempts at using the units in an ever increasing diversity of applications, applications which may have posed operating conditions for which the exchangers were not originally designed to operate under. Although many of the changes which have occurred are related to heat transfer efficiency, most have been to increase the reliability of the exchanger at higher temperatures, pressures and more corrosive chemical environments.
