This paper is a short description of a modern 2-stroke, medium speed diesel engine, with a remarkable competitive performance. A/S Wichmann presents a different and a more simple design of a propulsion or generator machinery than usual, having in mind the total economy of the ship owners. The prevailing parts of the components are developed at Wichmann. These are unique in the world of medium speed engines. Special attention must be given the design of the piston and the cylinder liner, furthermore the solution of the auxiliary blower drive and the simplicity/accessibility of all main components. The accessibility of the wearing components reduces the control and maintenance costs. The growth potential of the design is sufficient. Further development (load increase) depends on the experiences from engines in operation and the results achieved on the test engine. The secret of success in further development is to control the temperature level on the exposed parts. The new Wichmann WX28 engine, which has recently been introduced on the market, is a result of 8 years intensive development. The development is based on the experience from 10 mill. operating hours for the two stroke AX-type, from which more than 2 mill. hours are on heavy fuel. The excellent experiences from the AXAG engine and the aim to develop a heavy fuel engine, brought a new two-stroke, valveless engine into Wichmann's product program.
