It is shown how the two-stroke cycle engine first gradually reached a position where it could compete with the four-stroke type, how this position was further improved, and is still maintained though lately challenged by the four-stroke cycle engine. The loop scavenging and its development are described and compared with the uniflow scavenging. The importance of accurate manufacture of the ports is stressed. Different systems for improvement of the scavenging and slight supercharging are discussed. Experience from different methods of measuring the scavenging efficiency are given. By certain changes of the design it has been possible to omit the scavenging valves and some results given even show an improvement in fuel consumption. The influence of stroke-diameter ratio is discussed. Different types of scavenging pumps and their suitability for scavenging work on two-stroke cycle engines, are ventilated and the successful results with a new type ring-piston compressor are shown. Some views on supercharging of two-stroke cycle engines are given, and the introduction of rather moderate rates of supercharging on commercial engines are recommended until experience in operation is gained.
