The paper deals with some of the historical aspects of the world wide increase in the use of the four cycle compression ignition engine. An outline is given of the reasons for the development of particular types of engine to suit various kinds of application, and of how the conditions of operation have had their effect on design. Examples are given from the following types: - Stationary power plants ranging from horizontal to large vertical engine installations. - Transportable power producers varying from small power units to large self contained sets for oil field use. - Marine propulsion engines of mechanical and electrical drive. - Marine auxiliary engines of various kinds. - Locomotive and rail car engines with mechanical, hydraulic end electrical drive.
