Among the uses of motor-pumps groups either for raising or forcing back water, one will mention as being of a quite general order, those units which respectively concern the water supply of agglomerations and the resulting sewage discharge. For both categories, the two predominant notions are the operating convenience and the security. The first one of these notions results in a large application of electrical motor-pumps which comply with an automatic or semi-automatic running, when served by a minimum of people and particularly of trained people. But groups with independent running maintain a superior degree of security, as their operation only depends on the stock of fuel and of the staff serving the plant itself. However if, as a general rule, with regard to this staff, heat groups involve more attendance than electric devices, their operating characteristics offer as counterpart some advantages which will recommend their use, in some particular cases of pumping consequently, they are often applied under the form of several large units in pumping stations, and as a single group in plants of small importance, especially, when the question is to provide for occasional emergency; one will still use them in the place of electric installations (and no more as a duplicate of these ones) when intermittent but imperious needs, as those of food plants, as a mean of town sewerage, have to be satisfied. Services of the Water and Sewerage Board of Paris are examples of the various and besides unlimited conditions of their above mentioned application, giving the opportunity of illustrating the extent.
