At the present stage of development, an output of up to 17500 BHP on a single shaft can be obtained with the B&W turbo-charging system applied to the direct coupled, single-acting, turbo-charged, two-stroke B&W engines, which for many years have been extensively used as ships' propulsion engines. Of plants with up to 10000 BHP there are in October 1954 already 7 plants with this engine type in service and 22 on order. The experience from service with these plants, most of which are run on boiler oil as fuel, have proved satisfactory, apart from the few and slight disturbances in connection with the turbo-chargers, and which have involved but small inconvenience to the ships in question thanks to the precautions taken already when planning the plants with a view to securing their operation. The maintenance costs seem, at a given output, to become lower than for plants without turbo-charging, and the cylinder wear does not seem to have increased.
