The authors' company has completed the development for rating up the engine 'V60M' from 1500 bhp/cyl. to 2000 bhp/cyl. 1. In order to rate up this engine, the principal items were determined under sufficient planning. Furthermore the required conditions to rate up the engine, for example, combustion characteristics of the engine, turbocharger performances, supercharging systems, etc., were investigated. Based on these investigations, the following development works were conducted. 2. Combustion tests were conducted by use of a single cylinder test engine, 1L42M, and confirmed that the combustion at power rate of Pe = 25 kg/cm2 can be realized with reasonable performances. 3. Turbochargers 'M700W' with higher pressure ratio and larger air capacity were newly developed, and their performances were confirmed to meet the rated-up engine operating conditions. 4. Based on these above mentioned investigations and developments, tests for rating up the engine from Pe = 20 kg/cm2 to Pe = 25 kg/cm2 were tested mainly in order to investigate supercharging systems. The test results revealed that the engine performance of the two-stage system was very excellent at the rating of Pe = 25 kg/cm2 but that the single-stage constant-pressure system would be sufficiently suitable for practical use because a turbocharger which suits such highly rated engines as those rated at MEP of 25 kg/cm2 or above has been developed.
